We live in a small town where coyote problems are widespread enough to sometimes get national media attention.

Most of the problem is created by ignorant doofi who insist on leaving dog or cat food and open trash out 24x7; who leave bunny-sized pocket pets out alone in rural yards and otherwise 'wuv' wild critters... as long as they don't pose a nuisance to *them*.

We've found that good outdoor hygiene and the presence of 2 or more medium to XXL dogs prevents problems.
